Business Profile - about me

"living is being underwater"

I live in the village of Abersoch, one of North Wales's premier yachting venues - sometimes we regret it as it becomes very busy in the Summer, but the surrounding coastal area and country is outstandingly beautiful and it is easy to loose sight of that. Because of the nature of my commitments, many customers prefer to contact me during evening hours.  I provide 24 hour service for real emergencies and customers wishing to discuss problems will usually receive a reply on one of the telephone numbers. On occasion I can be found on board my boat 'Captain Skinner' at Hafan Pwllheli/Pwllheli Marina.(Berth 5A4)

Good and professional service can generally only be provided by technically qualified individuals - it is a sad fact that many people operating as 'engineers' are poorly qualified. As a full member of the Institute of Engineering Technology, I hold a Bachelor's Degree with honours in Science, an Incorporated Engineering (I.Eng.) degree from the Engineering Council, a Post Graduate teaching degree (PGCE), HNC in Electronic Engineering and ONC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Some of the other bits of paper accumulated over the years include HSE Part II in mixed gas/diving bell diving, RYA/DTI Yachtmaster (commercial) and various instructor's certificates in Scuba Diving, Nitrox and First Aid.  For many years I worked as a diving supervisor and diver in the North Sea, the Middle East, Nigeria, Norway, Holland, India and other parts of the World. During my commercial diving career I contracted to Nordive, Taylor Diving, Comex, Oceaneering, Ocean Systems and other smaller companies.

As an Electrical Inspector on the role of NAPIT, I inspect domestic and industrial installations on a consultancy basis, providing inspections when required for insurance or property purchase. I am currently National Diploma Course Coordinator at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor's marine engineering facility at Pwllheli, North Wales, lecturing in electronics, computers, mathematics and marine engineering. Anyone interested in marine engineering or boat-building courses can find contact information at the marine section including a link to Richard Tudor who plans the RYA courses. Past business activities have included single and three phase industrial, commercial and domestic electrical design and installation and I provide an efficient problem solving service in those fields. I held NICEIC approval for some 15 years (Approved Contractor No.12500) as an active electrical contractor, before diverging into marine electronics activities. Repairs to refrigeration systems are part of my service and I hold the relevent City & Guilds of London certificate in Handling Refrigerant Gases. My previous lecturing post at Coleg Menai, Bangor included teaching of City & Guilds 2360 and 2330 Electrical Installation, including 2381 and 2391 and I was Course Tutor for National Certificate (Electrical) and City & Guilds 6078 NVQ in Refrigeration.

For relaxation my earlier involvement in deep commercial diving has continued with scuba diving as a hobby and the occasional special project. Over 20 years experience with explosives, both underwater and on land, has involved me in commercial salvage ventures and in consultancy work for official bodies. It would be true to say that second to my family, diving is an absolute passion and the only time I am truly relaxed is when I am underwater. (Sad, isn't it, but keen divers know what I mean!) If I don't dive because of bad weather or poor underwater visibility, I get bad tempered and difficult to live with, as my wife can testify. It would be true to say that I am passionately addicted to diving and have been for over 42 years.

Fellow divers needing Oxygen clean compressed air for their cylinders can contact me during the evening at Abersoch. Advance notice is preferred if calling as I don't make a point of waiting for people at weekends unless by arrangement - life is too short and there is only so much diving time left.  Diving regulators and other equipment can be serviced to the highest standards for those that require it, during the Winter period.  Honest and impartial advice is free.
